4 Reasons to Garden this Spring

Springtime means getting outside and soaking up the sun and enjoying the first days of warm weather. It also a great time to start working on your garden.

The benefits of gardening are more than just planting healthy foods or pretty flowers. It can be fun, rewarding, and bring happiness and health benefits.

Whether you want to grow a garden in your yard or have a few planters on your balcony, here are some reasons to roll up your sleeves and start planting!

Build up a sweat

Pulling weeds and getting your hands dirty will help you burn some calories while enjoying the outdoors. You can burn up to 330 calories an hour and improve your strength, stamina, and flexibility.

The extra exercise is not only good for your waistline but can have long-term health benefits. One study found that gardening regularly can cut the risk of stroke and heart attack by 30%.

Boost your mood and self-esteem

Gardening can brighten your day and reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and can increase life satisfaction. Research has found that gardening not only improves moods but can lower cortisol levels, also known as the stress hormone. With the ongoing stress of COVID-19, an activity like gardening can take your mind off the constant news cycle and help you be mindful.

Not only will going outside and gardening boost your mood, but also it can give you a sense of accomplishment and can build your self-esteem. Watching your seeds or bulbs grow into plants throughout the summer is rewarding and provides us with a sense of responsibility.

Create better eating habits

Growing vegetables and fruit can help you develop better-eating habits! Only one out of 10 American adults eat the recommended serving of fruits and vegetables per day. Gardening allows you to try fruits or vegetables that you may not have tried otherwise. A study done by the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources found that those who garden ate twice as many vegetables and saw a reduction in their monthly food bill. Even kids, who are notoriously picky eaters, eat more fruits and vegetables when there is a community garden in their school or community.

Improves Memory Function

Some plants you may decide to grow can be a natural brain booster. Herbs such as peppermint, ginger, rosemary, and thyme can help your brain and memory can be easily added to any dish and grow right on your balcony.
